Prefix কাকে বলে?

Prefix হচ্ছে একটি/কয়েকটি letter এর সমষ্ঠি যেগুলো stem (ধাতু) এর আগে বসে নতুন word তৈরি করে। এই বর্ণ/বর্ণসমষ্ঠির common নাম হচ্ছে affix.

Affix গুলোর সাধারণত নিজস্ব কোন অর্থ থাকে না কিন্তু তারা অন্য root word এর আগে/পরে বসে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করে।

তাই বলা যায় যে, যে affix গুলো root word এর আগে বসে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করে তাকে prefix বলা হয়।

“A prefix is an affix which is placed before the stem of a word.” – Wilson (2011)

A prefix is “a letter or group of letters that is added at the beginning of a word to change its meaning.” – Merriam Webster.

Prefix এর বিষয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু তথ্য

1. English এ ভিন্ন ভিন্ন prefix একই অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে পারে।

• un-, in-, non- এর সাহায্যে "not", "opposite of" এর মতো অর্থ প্রকাশ পায়। 
• Undo (opposite of DO ), 
• invisibile (not Visible), 
• nonfiction (opposite of Fiction),
• mis-, ir- এর সাহায্যে "wrong", "wrongly", "incorrectly", "not", "incurrect" এর মতো প্রকাশ পায়।  
• Mislead (Wrong/ incorrect lead)
• Irregular (not Regular)

2. কিছু কিছু ক্ষেত্রে double letter হয়ে থাকে। 

• শুরুতে M যুক্ত কোন শব্দের সাথে im- prefix টি যুক্ত হলে ২ টি M হয়। 
• Im+measurable = immeasurable 
• শুরুতে N যুক্ত কোন শব্দের সাথে un- prefix টি যুক্ত হলে ২ টি N হয়।
• Un+noticeable = Unnoticeable    

3. কোন শব্দের সাথে prefix যুক্ত হলেও মূল শব্দের spelling বা বানান অপরিবর্তিত থাকে।

• unhappy শব্দে Un- prefix টি happy এর বানান পরিবর্তন করে না।
• Relive শব্দে Re- prefix টি  live এর বানানে কোন পরিবর্তন আনে না।   

4. Lookalikes এর ব্যাপারে সতর্ক হওয়া।

• Uncle, reach, real এর মতো মূল শব্দে un-, re-, এর মতো prefix নেই।

প্রচলিত এবং বহুল ব্যবহৃত  prefix এবং suffix এর অর্থ সম্পর্কে ধারণা থাকলে,  অপরিচিত English words এর অর্থ সহজেই বুঝতে পারা সম্ভব হয়। শব্দের বানান বা spelling এ ভালো করতে সহায়তা পাওয়া যায়। 

কারো Vocabulary তৈরি করার ক্ষেত্রে prefix ও suffix সহায়ক ভূমিকা রাখতে না পারলেও, অপরিচিত শব্দগুলোকে তুলনামূলক কম কঠিন শব্দ হিসেবে আমাদের সামনে উপস্থাপন করে এবং আংশিকভাবে বোধগম্য করে তুলতে সহায়তা করে থাকে।
